Ruby (Odem)

The stone of the tribe of Reuben

Deep crimson red — Faceted corundum — Tribe of Reuben

About the stone

Ruby (אֹדֶם) is the stone assigned to the tribe of Reuben in the High Priest's breastplate — the Hoshen Mishpat described in Exodus 28. Set in gold, it was one of twelve stones engraved with the names of the tribes of Israel, worn over the heart of the Kohen Gadol as he entered the Holy of Holies.

The defining colour of this stone is captured in the breastplate palette as #B33A2E — a hue that has been prized in jewelry and sacred art for millennia. The tribe of Reuben carried this stone as their emblem, and tradition associates it with their unique character and blessing.

At Divine Stones, every Ruby piece is one-of-a-kind — sourced, authenticated, and set by master jewelers. The stone may appear as a solitaire, in a halo setting, or as part of a multi-stone composition honoring the Hoshen tradition.

In Scripture

Ruby (Odem) is mentioned in Exodus 28:17, in the description of the breastplate stones.

And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, four rows of stones: a row of carnelian, topaz, and smaragd shall be the first row;

Tradition & Commentary

Jewish tradition, through Rashi, Ibn Ezra, and the Targum Yonatan, identifies Ruby (אֹדֶם) as one of the twelve stones of the Hoshen. Each stone was chosen not only for its beauty but for the qualities it symbolized — qualities tied to the tribe whose name it bore.

The tribe of Reuben received its blessing from Jacob (Genesis 49) and Moses (Deuteronomy 33). The stone Ruby is understood by commentators to reflect aspects of that blessing — whether in colour, rarity, or the natural properties of the gem.

We describe the tradition rather than assert metaphysical claims. 'Tradition associates Ruby with clarity and wisdom' — not 'this stone will grant you wisdom.' Every piece at Divine Stones is sold for its craftsmanship and gemological quality, never for promised effects.

Modern Gemology

Ruby belongs to a mineral family whose members have been cut and polished for thousands of years. Its formation deep within the earth, under heat and pressure, produces the colour and internal structure that gemologists grade by the 'Four Cs' — color, clarity, cut, and carat weight.

Whether set in 18k gold, platinum, or sterling silver, Ruby requires expert cutting to reveal its full brilliance. At Divine Stones, every piece is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity — GIA, IGI, EGL, or our in-house gemological COA for stones under $500.
